Spring Home Improvement Ideas

Now that the cold, gloomy winter has begun to pass away, spring is near with warmer days, breezy afternoons, and abundant sunshine. As a homeowner, though, the light spring brings to your home can highlight some of the damage winter left behind. As the seasons change here are a few spring home improvement ideas.

Inspect the Great Outdoors

If you’re like most folks during the winter time, you’ve spent a large part of your winter indoors staying warm and dry. Hopefully over those chilly months, you’ve managed to take care of some indoor improvement projects, but with the spring arriving, it’s time to go outside.

This is an excellent time to begin a loose inspection of the exterior of your home. Check your roof, paint, exterior trim, and gutters as a starting point. All of these aspects of your home take quite a beating from the persistent winds, rain, and temperatures of the winter months, so it should come as no surprise that these areas need the most attention when spring arrives.

Be a Mechanic: Check Your Moving Parts

While the exterior of your home is the most likely part of your house to need attention, your mechanical systems will probably need some love as well. Check your moving parts!

Start with exterior faucets, and inspect for any freeze damage.Turn them on to make sure that everything is in working order. Damaged plumbing can not only be costly to repair, but the price to fix floods from poorly maintained pipes can be a nightmare.

Secondly, check your HVAC system. Have a certified HVAC technician completely check your air conditioner inside and out. You can take it upon yourself to make sure that some simple HVAC maintenance is taken care of such as changing the filter, pouring bleach down your primary drain, and making sure that no major debris has dirtied up your condenser. Don’t wait until it’s hot to call a technician!

Get Your Lawn Equipment Running

If you’re an experienced home owner, then you know how out of hand a lawn and landscaping can get when the first warm spell passes through in the spring. While many of us hesitate to cut the grass for the first time in favor of playing outdoors, the last thing you want is to fire up your power tools only to find that they are still hibernating.

Take some time before the weeds take over to test all of your power equipment, get everything in working order, and make repairs to your tools as needed. Repair shops are more likely to be overwhelmed during those first weeks of spring, so get a jump on your lawn and landscaping early before you need your equipment.
