If you’re living a busy life, then it’s easy to fall into the trap of cluttering up your living space. Granted, no one intentionally clutters their home, but over time we tend to look up and see our desks, counters, tables, and shelves cluttered with our belongings. Whether these belongings need to remain in your house is a different story altogether, but dealing with clutter is simple if you just take a little bit of time every day to make a concerted effort to declutter.
You certainly don’t have to spend a lot of time decluttering, but if you do so daily, then it eliminates the need to spend hours cleaning up on the weekends when you could be doing other much more enjoyable things. Adopt these habits for a clutter-free home and free up not only your space and time but your mind as well.
Start in Personal Spaces
It’s easy to look into your living room, dining room, or entertainment area and see a massive amount of collective clutter from every member of the family and it seems as though that would be the most logical place to start. While, yes, you’ll want to tackle those spaces eventually, start with the easy victory–the place where only you dwell.
For example, start in your master bedroom or your personal bedroom if you have a space all to yourself. By decluttering your own personal area, you’re not reliant on others decluttering their space or a family common area. From there, further dissect your de-cluttering efforts into smaller areas within your space: desk, shelves, nightstand, etc. By partitioning off your room into smaller spaces, you’ll be more successful in the long run.
Declutter Your Bathroom
Bathrooms are notorious places for clutter to accumulate, especially if you share space with kids or other family members. Not only can they get cluttered, but these shared common spaces can often fall victim to the “broken window theory” where everyone notices the damage, but no one takes responsibility to clean. This can lead to not only a cluttered bathroom, but a downright dirty one.
Every morning when you finish using your bathroom (i.e. brushing your teeth), take a few brief moments to put away toiletries, wipe any water from the mirrors and counter space, and generally put away anything that shouldn’t sit out throughout the day. By doing this each and every morning, you start the habit of putting away items that are only used once or twice per day, and keeping the habit up will prevent clutter in the future.
Dump the Junk Drawer
Everyone has one: the dreaded junk drawer. It’s the catch-all for things that just don’t have homes, and it’s easy to stuff it full of trash, odds and ends, and things that “we’ll use one day”. Dumping out your junk drawer is a satisfying and very useful way to declutter.
Start, obviously, by throwing away anything that no longer has a purpose. Screws, nails, nicknacks, rubber bands, you name it, can all be thrown away or disposed of properly. Next, decide on what needs to remain and categorize it along with the rest of the things in your home–the last thing you want is to simply organize your junk drawer. Instead, take everything out, find a place for it, and empty the drawer entirely.
If you simply don’t have enough space for the things you own, then get rid of old items or things you don’t use anymore. Additionally, perhaps some creative construction or a shed is the right thing for you in your family. If that’s the case, then contact Tidewater Mortgage Services, Inc., today!
